About Miyabe maple
The Miyabe maple (scientific name: Acer miyabei Maximowicz), a deciduous tree with beautiful five-lobed leaves in the maple family (which is now part of the soapberry family), was named after Dr. Kingo Miyabe, a member of the second graduating class of Sapporo Agricultural College (today’s Hokkaido University), as it was found by him in 1884 while he was collecting plants in Shizunai in Hokkaido’s Hidaka region. The Miyabe maple is used in the logo of the Hokkaido University Botanic Garden , where Dr. Miyabe served as the first director. It is listed as a Vulnerable (VU) species in the Red List published by the Ministry of the Environment.
